Police have charged a fifth suspect in the Jan. 24 robbery and beating of a man who said he was attacked while walking down a Wilson street.
Demetrius Meeks, 20, of 1715 Birchwood Drive, was arrested Friday in connection to the robbery, Wilson police spokesman Sgt. Steve Stroud said Monday evening.
Meeks is charged with felony robbery with a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Wilson County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond.
Three other men — 17-year-old Tyrell D. Ellis of Monique Road, Lucama; 17-year-old Jamal Meadows of Spruce Street; and 27-year-old Shannon T. Bynum of Railroad Street — face charges in the incident along with a 15-year-old who faces juvenile charges.
Police say the suspects assaulted and robbed 55-year-old Michael Watkins around 8:45 p.m. Jan. 24 while Watkins was walking on the 200 block of Jackson Street.
Watkins told police he was struck from behind and attacked by a group of men armed with a handgun and a stick, Stroud said. The assailants searched his pockets and removed his wallet during the assault.
Stroud said Watkins was able to escape and asked for help to call police. Wilson County EMS paramedics provided first-aid treatment and Watkins said he did not need a medical evaluation at the hospital.
Ellis, Meadows and Bynum each received a $50,000 secured bond at the time of their arrests. The 15-year-old suspect was taken to a juvenile detention center in Pitt County.
Police are still investigating the robbery and assault. Anyone with information is asked to call the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
