The 3-A Big East Conference boys and girls basketball tournaments will not be contested in 2018.

As the proverbial perfect storm of winter weather closings and exam schedules wreaked havoc with the league’s timeframe, athletic directors decided Thursday to abandon the conference tournament and instead attempt to finish the 10-game regular season during tourney week.

Friday’s Big East slate — featuring Franklinton at Hunt, Northern Nash at Fike and Rocky Mount and Southern Nash have been moved to the week of the conference tournament. Next Tuesday’s slate of games — Fike at Hunt, Southern Nash at Franklinton and Northern Nash at Rocky Mount have also been moved to tournament week as exam schedules must still be completed. Also in jeopardy are two additional Big East championships in wrestling and swimming. Saturday’s scheduled dual team championships, as well as next Wednesday’s swimming championships at Rocky Mount’s Harrison Family YMCA, may not be contested. A final decision on those events is expected Friday.

Shifting is also underway in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference.

Beddingfield’s scheduled Friday road games at SouthWest Edgecombe has been reset for Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m.

The Bruins’ scheduled nonconference home game with Southern Nash on Wednesday has been canceled, instead allowing Beddingfield to host EPC rival Farmville Central on that night. Another EPC Friday night tilt, North Johnston at Nash Central, is postponed with no makeup date yet announced.
