AHOSKIE — Despite taking a four-point lead into halftime during Tuesday’s opening round game of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs, the Community Christian School varsity girls basketball team succumbed to the rebounding and speed of host Ridgecroft in the second half as the Lady Cyclones were eliminated from the postseason with a 48-41 defeat.

CCS, which saw five seniors play their final games, finished its season at 15-10 in the first year under head coach Mark Kent, giving CCS the most victories in program history. Ridgecroft improved to 13-8 and will take on No. 6 seed Halifax Academy in the second round.

The Lady Cyclones were decked by a 15-8 margin against it in the third quarter. Key in the fourth was Ridgecroft outpacing the Lady Cyclones from the free-throw line down the stretch.

“The third quarter killed us,” Kent said. “They made a run that turned the game around.”

Morgan Lane had 16 points to lead CCS in her final game. Anna Jackson, another senior, had 10 points. Also playing their final games were Whitney Bissette, Olivia Bullard and Greyson Winstead.
