A man and his girlfriend are behind bars after authorities say they shot and injured another man Sunday.
Devanta Jamal Battle, 24, and Sabrina Larene Presley, 29, both face charges of attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Battle, of 609 Lincoln St., is currently jailed under a $5 million secured bond. Presley’s bond was set at $25,000.
Wilson County sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of Haynes and Beauvue roads near Elm City at 6:16 p.m. Sunday.
Deputies found the victim, 30-year-old William Saxton, who was walking out from the grassy area at the corner of the two roads, according to Wanda Samuel, sheriff’s office chief of staff. Officials say Saxton was shot in the face and the center of his back.
Officials said Battle contacted Saxton about going to look for a car that was for sale at his relative’s home. The two were acquaintances, officials said.
Battle and Presley picked up Saxton from his home, but once they approached Haynes and Beauvue roads, Battle fired his gun at Saxton, striking him in the cheek, according to Samuel.
Saxton got out of the vehicle and was then shot in the back, deputies said. Saxton was able to take cover and hide until authorities arrived.
Battle and Presley, who was driving the vehicle, fled the scene before deputies arrived, Samuel said.
Saxton was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for treatment.
On Wednesday, detectives received information regarding Battle’s whereabouts. A search warrant was executed at 1901 Lipscomb Road, Apt. F2, where Battle was found. He was taken into custody without incident.
Presley, of 606 Sims St., turned herself in to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday.
Battle was also charged with discharging a firearm in an enclosed area to incite fear in connection to the incident.
