ROCKY MOUNT — A man and woman from Bailey face drug trafficking charges after authorities say 300 bags of heroin were found during a search of their car.

Christopher Holland and Amy Lynn Utley, both 32, were arrested following a traffic stop on Cokey Road in Rocky Mount, Lt. Kevin West of the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office said in a Friday news release.

West said the pair were stopped as part of a Tar River Regional Drug Task Force investigation into heroin trafficking. Holland was driving the car and authorities discovered the heroin under the passenger seat, where Utley had been sitting, according to the release.

Sheriff Clee Atkinson “states that the cooperation with other agencies is key to fighting the heroin and opioid epidemic in our community,” West wrote, adding that aggressive enforcement combined with recovery and mental health initiatives “are a pathway to making an impact to curbing this epidemic.”

The task force includes officers from the Wilson, Rocky Mount, Nashville, Spring Hope and Tarboro police departments and the Nash County and Edgecombe County sheriff’s offices along with state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Holland and Utley were each charged with two counts of Level I trafficking of heroin and booked into the Edgecombe County Detention Center in Tarboro. Each defendant received a $250,000 secured bond.
