Fike High boys soccer players Gavin Wheeler and Kevin Mendoza represented the East Region at the Powerade State Games of North Carolina on June 22-23 in Charlotte.
“I’m very happy both Kevin and Gavin earned the opportunity to be a part of this event and to showcase themselves among a strong group of players,” Fike head coach Chris Mizelle said. “They continue to impress and serve as excellent representatives of our school and program. We hope they will take this experience and build on it for a great season in the fall.”
The East Region roster, which broadly included players from the Wilson, Wilmington and the Jacksonville areas, finished in third place on the weekend after posting a 1-2 record in a round-robin format.
Mendoza, who played center midfielder, and Wheeler, who split time at striker and on the left wing, were the only two players from The Wilson Times readership area to participate in the tournament that was held at Queens University in front of North Carolina college coaches.
In game 1 of the tournament, the East Region team fell 3-2 to South Region, which finished undefeated. In the loss, the East Region scored the only goals of the weekend on the South squad. The following day, the East team gave up a goal to fall 1-0 to the North Region.
In the final game of the weekend played directly after that, Mendoza scored two goals to help his team recover to beat the West Region, 5-2, and finish play with a victory. The South team sat atop the standings with a 3-0 record, followed by the North team (1-1-1), then East and finally the West Region (0-2-1).
After being honored on the state level as talented soccer players, Wheeler and Mendoza are expected to provide a veteran presence for the Golden Demons in their respective junior and senior campaigns coming up in the fall.
