The Gamma Beta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority’s foundation, the Odelle W. Barnes Center for Community Services and the Wilson Community College Foundation hosted “A Taste of Gospel Music” in the Del Mastro Auditorium at Wilson Community College on Feb. 10.

The gospel choir from North Carolina Central University performed eight selections led by an uplifting message from Devin Mercer. Tommy Clark directed the choir.

Hundreds of patrons and dozens of Wilson-area businesses and churches sponsored this event. The Gamma Beta Omega chapter raised funds to support college scholarships for Wilson County high school students and assist Wilson Community College honor society students with membership dues.

Following the program, choir members were treated to a meal provided by Parker’s Barbecue and Bojangles’, served at the O.W. Barnes Center. Many of the sorority members are alumni of North Carolina Central University and spent time with the choir members reminiscing about present and past-day college experiences.

President Kimberly Knight thanked the Wilson community for supporting the cause and a special thank-you was extended to the Wilson Community College Foundation for its partnership. Event coordinator Altise Harris said she looks forward to partnering with others to serve the needs of students in Wilson County.
