Senior Night proved to be a special one for the four seniors on the Beddingfield High varsity girls basketball team Friday night.

The Lady Bruins downed SouthWest Edgecombe 51-42 in the regular-season finale to claim second place in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference and secure a North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoff spot for the first time since 2016 — when Beddingfield’s four seniors — Trinity Anderson, Shamya Best, Makayla Everette and Aa’Niyah Sherrod — were still in eighth grade.

“They’ve been through some very tough times at Beddingfield and I’m very happy they got to experience some success and go to the playoffs,” Lady Bruins head coach Debra Pegram said.

The win boosted Beddingfield’s overall record to 16-6 as they finished EPC play with a 7-3 mark. SouthWest Edgecombe, which could have tied Beddingfield with a win, exited 15-8 overall and 5-5 in conference games.

Everette, the Lady Bruins’ 6-foot-4 center, again led the way with 18 points, 19 rebounds, six blocks and three assists while freshman Daneesha Briggs totaled 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Anderson had seven points and three assists.

Junior point guard Jada Battle paced SWE with 12 points while senior Adriane McKinney had 11 points and freshman Jer’lisah Pridgen added nine points.

Beddingfield gained control of the game in the second quarter and led 25-16 at the half. The Lady Cougars fought back late in the third quarter but Beddingfield, despite an overall 12-of-19 showing (63.2%) at the foul line, hit some clutch free throws late, Pegram said.

While Beddingfield claimed the regular-season sweep of SouthWest Edgecombe, the teams could meet again Wednesday in the EPC tournament semifinals at Beddingfield. The Lady Cougars will face No. 6 North Johnston in the first round.
