MURFREESBORO — A pair of juniors, Kayli Ashenfelter and Angelina Scarpa, came through with big performances in the Barton College women’s lacrosse team’s 18-2 dominant win over Chowan on the road Wednesday afternoon.

Ashenfelter, a midfielder, led all scorers with five goals on seven total shots, while Scarpa, an attacker, produced a pair of goals and tacked on seven assists in the Conference Carolinas victory.

Chowan (0-2,0-1) scored just two goals in the first half and trailed Barton (2-0, 2-0) 10-2 at halftime.

To start the contest, Barton scored the first three goals, allowed one from the Hawks, then answered with five-consecutive scores to build a big first-half lead.

In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs scored eight more unanswered goals while holding the Hawks, who managed just two shots after halftime, scoreless. Barton junior Katherine Mattena held down the goal, capturing a pair of saves in just under 39 minutes of work. Felicity Borge came in relief of Mattena later in the game, adding another save after facing one shot from the Hawks attack.

Adding to the scoring column for Barton, Samantha Diaz scored three goals, while Ashley Teilborg and Lydia Hulshizer added two each. Jordan Hare pitched in a goal and assisted on three others.

The Lady Bulldogs dominated by a 31-7 advantage in shots taken and 43-36 margin in ground balls.

In total, nine Barton players scored before the end of the game.

Barton, averaging 14 goals per game to start the season, will host Lincoln Memorial University (Tenn.) on Saturday at 11 a.m.
