SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Winning.

That’s all the Barton College women’s volleyball team has been doing since Sept. 21. The Lady Bulldogs won their seventh straight match with a 25-22, 25-11, 25-20 sweep of host Converse College on Saturday afternoon. The victory propelled the Lady Bulldogs, reigning conference champions, to 6-0 in NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas and to 10-11 overall.

Barton recorded 45 kills and hit for a .289 percentage in dealing Converse its sixth conference loss against one win. The Valkyries stand 4-17 overall.

Sophomore Kaytlin Elkins, the conference player of the week each of the last two weeks, triggered Barton with a career-high 17 digs and a match-high 14 kills. Senior Allie Cullens hammered 10 kills and hit a torrid .533. Senior Haley Headley added seven kills.

Senior Angelica Acevedo notched a match-high 41 assists, while freshman Brittany Silance worked for a match-high 19 kills. Riley Bane, a red-shirt senior from Fike High, contributed 15 kills and two service aces.

The first set featured six lead changes and both teams traded 3-0 sprees. Cullens’ kill sent Barton ahead 21-17. Converse cut the deficit to 23-22 before Barton prevailed on consecutive kills from Elkins.

The Lady Bulldogs, in the second set, capped an opening 4-0 run with a pair of aces from Bane, and led from start to finish. A 6-0 spurt featured a pair of aces from Silance and was capped by an Elkins kill. Leading as much as 19-7, Barton secured the set on a double-block from Cullens and sophomore Camryn Frederick.

Converse, in the final set, erased a three-point deficit with a 6-0 spurt and owned a 14-13 edge before the Lady Bulldogs drew even on an Elkins kill. Barton pulled away after a 4-0 tear that included two Headley kills and Acevedo’s ace.


Barton, Emmanuel finish scoreless

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. — At least, the latest Conference Carolinas overtime didn’t eventually end in defeat for the Barton College women’s soccer team Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs and Emmanuel College battled 110 minutes (90 minutes regulation, 20 minutes overtime) to a scoreless finish.

Playing a conference overtime encounter for the fourth time (1-2-1), the Lady Bulldogs emerged 1-3-1 in the conference and 5-4-1 overall. The Lady Lions came away 4-1-1 and 5-3-1, respectively.

Barton came up empty despite nine second-half shots, three shots on goal in regulation and two shots on frame in the second overtime.

Junior Maddie Robertson’s four shots led Barton, while junior Rebekah Beal cranked three. Lady Bulldogs junior goalkeeper Megan Bolick was tested for the first time in the 43rd minute.

In the final seven minutes of regulation, Beal cranked a Barton shot and Robertson unleashed a pair.

Barton sophomore Hannah Beard managed the only shot in the first OT. The Lady Bulldogs’ final attempt in the 109th minute by senior Laisy Scardazzi was blocked by the Lady Lions defense.

The Lady Bulldogs posted a 26-23 edge in shots and, in goal, Bolick amassed five saves as compared to 14 for Emmanuel’s Moriah Logue.

Barton welcomes conference newcomer Chowan University at 7 p.m. Thursday.


Bulldogs deadlock No. 1 Emmanuel, 1-1

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. — The Barton College men’s soccer team would have preferred a win, but its 1-1 tie against conference-leading Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon kept it in contention for the Conference Carolinas regular-season tie.

The Bulldogs now stand 3-1-1 in the league and 6-2-1 overall, while Emmanuel owns a half-game lead at 4-1-1. The Lions are 6-4-1 overall.

The teams battled 110 minutes, but the two goals were scored nine seconds apart with approximately two minutes elapsed in the second half.

At the 46:50 mark, Jeremy Gwaltney staked the Lions to a 1-0 edge with his first goal of 2018.

Barton promptly answered. Sophomore Ruben Mancio, last week’s conference player of the week, tied the match with his team-leading eighth goal.

Barton junior goalkeeper Francisco Noguera notched seven saves, while the Lions’ Andy Dunnett had five. Emmanuel, which entered with a three-match winning streak, claimed a 26-10 margin in shots.

The Bulldogs welcome Chowan University for a conference match at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
