ELM CITY — Lawrence Julian “Larry” Gaissert III died on Feb. 7, 2018, at Transitions LifeCare, Raleigh.

He was born March 24, 1948, in Atlanta to Lawrence Julian Gaissert Jr. and Zora Cook Gaissert. He grew up in Fairfax and Birmingham, Alabama, and was a graduate of Auburn University. He moved to North Carolina in 1979 to take a position in the Wilson County Social Security office and remained a North Carolinian for the rest of his life. He retired from the Social Security Administration in 2005 after a 30-year career as a claims representative and IT specialist.

Larry is survived by his wife, Carroll Best Gaissert; daughters, Amber Chrismon, and husband, Robert, of Greensboro and Mindy Pender of Wilson; grandsons, Dylan Gaissert, and wife, Megan, of Goldsboro and Damon Chrismon of Greensboro; by a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Strohm, and husband, Steve, of Raleigh; and step-granddaughters, Andrea and Ellie Strohm; and his stepmother, Barbara Gaissert of Athens, Georgia.

Larry was a deeply spiritual person and an outspoken advocate of social justice issues.

A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1725 N. New Hope Road, Raleigh.
