MOREHEAD CITY — Fike High managed just four hits in Friday’s nonconference varsity baseball game at West Carteret but that was enough for the Golden Demons to get a 5-2 victory thanks to the combined effort of senior Jaelynn Melton and Tanner Sullivan on the mound.
Melton, a senior right-hander who has signed with Brunswick Community College, gave up just two runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks while striking out seven to pick up his second win against one loss. Sullivan slammed the door on the 3-A Coastal Conference Patriots with two shutout innings for his first save.
Fike of the 3-A Big East Conference rose to 5-2 while West Carteret lost for the first time in four games.
Fike scored in the top of the first inning when junior Zach Pittman drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored when Hunter Stokely’s grounder was misplayed by the Patriots first baseman. The Demons added two more on Garrett Browder’s two-out, two-run single in the top of the second after West Carteret starting pitching Davis Tyndall walked the bases full, two of his eight free passes on the game.
Fike went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth when Pittman walked, took third on Browder’s single and scored on a wild pitch. After the Patriots touched Melton for a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, Fike got one back with an unearned marker in the sixth.
Sullivan pitched around a pair of walks in the seventh.
The Demons will start Big East play at home Monday evening against Southern Nash.
