Authorities have made an arrest in the shooting death of an Elm City man whose body was discovered in a field Sunday afternoon.
The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division charged 20-year-old Aisonte Artis of Wilson with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the killing of 61-year-old William Earl Hooker Sr.
Artis was arrested Tuesday night after detectives interviewed him, according to Wanda Samuel, sheriff’s office chief of staff. He is being held without bond in the Wilson County Detention Center.
Artis’ first court appearance is slated for Friday.
Samuel said Hooker and Artis were acquaintances and robbery was a contributing factor in the case.
She said a search warrant was also executed at Artis’ home, 215 Vance St., Apt. B.
Hooker died as a result of several gunshot wounds, officials said Wednesday.
Samuel said a family member had reported Hooker missing around 2:19 a.m. Sunday. She said he hadn’t returned home over a period of several hours and wasn’t answering his cellphone, which was unusual behavior for him.
Less than 12 hours later, the sheriff’s office received a 1:30 p.m. call regarding a welfare check about a man lying in a field in the 3600 block of Van Slyke Road near Elm City.
Hooker was found dead less than 4 miles away from his Curve Road home.
