NC Baseball Museum Celebrity Golf Tournament is set for May 23

Former major league baseball players Pokey Reese and John Roper along with Carolina Hurricanes play-by-play announcer are among the first-time participants in the North Carolina Baseball Museum’s 16th annual Celebrity Golf Tournament, set for Wednesday, May 23, at Wedgewood Public Golf Course.

Reese, a South Carolina native, spent eight seasons in the big leagues, mostly with the Cincinnati Reds. He was a member of the Boston Red Sox team that rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the 2004 American League Championship Series to beat the New York Yankees in seven games before winning the franchise’s first World Series since 1918.

Roper, a native of Southern Pines, spent three seasons in the majors, also mostly with the Reds.

Kaiton has been with the Hurricanes since they joined the NHL as the Hartford Whalers in 1979.

Other former MLB players expected to attend include Scott Pose, Monty Montgomery, Jim Coates, Billy Harris, John Donaldson, Jonny Grubb, Tommy Smith, Marion “Tim” Talton, Fred Valentine, Mike Caldwell and Floyd Wicker.

Other celebrities include former Duke broadcaster Bob Harris, former N.C. State football and baseball stars Fred and Francis Combs, former Wolfpack point guard and college basketball coach Eddie Biedenbach, former Duke point guard Steve Vacendak, former Greene Central baseball coach James “Rabbit” Fulghum, former Fike High football coach Henry Trevathan and Don Fish and Bobby Guthrie of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

A celebrity is added to a team of three players making it a foursome.

Also available this year are $25 Super Ticket that includes scratch card with chance to win an eight-night, seven-day vacation for two at a choice of one of 30 locations with low score. A hole-in-one scratch card wins the same type vacation.
