Police say the suspect in a Tuesday shooting near Wilson Medical Center robbed, abducted and sexually assaulted his victim before turning his gun on her.
Keyshane M. Sanders, 28, of 719 Viola St., was identified as the alleged shooter late Tuesday night. Sanders is accused in an incident that caused precautionary lockdowns at the hospital, a Vinson-Bynum Elementary School and nearby businesses.
Police charged Sanders with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon and first-degree forcible sex offense, according to Wilson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Steve Stroud.
Police were called to Wilson Medical Center at 2:55 p.m. and a woman told officers a man who was parked in a lot across from the 1705 S. Tarboro St. hospital had shot her, Sgt. Steve Stroud said. She ran to the hospital for help and told police the shooter ran away.
The woman was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville and was in stable condition Tuesday night. The Wilson Times does not identify victims of sexual assault.
Stroud said police ordered a lockdown for "all businesses and schools in the area" while officers conducted a manhunt for the shooter. No incidents were reported at the hospital, elementary school or area businesses and the lockdowns were lifted after Sanders was taken into custody.
During the search, officers found a green four-door passenger car in a parking lot just west of the Wilson Medical Plaza and across Tarboro Street from the hospital's main entrance. Police established a perimeter with yellow crime tape at the entrance to the parking are where the car was found.
A Wilson Police Department K-9 and members of the police forensics unit assisted in the manhunt. Stroud credited information "gained from the victim and witnesses" with the suspect's arrest.
Sanders was booked into the Wilson County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond.
