Southern Nash wins awards at national FFA competition

A team from Southern Nash High School competed in the 2017 National Future Farmers of America Horse Evaluation Career Development Event in Indianapolis in November. The event was held in conjunction with the 90th National FFA Convention & Expo.

The top 10 individuals and the national winning team members received cash awards to recognize their success in the event. The cash awards and the event were sponsored by Ram Trucks, Standlee Premium Western Forage, Tractor Supply Company and Wahl Clipper Corporation.

SNHS won several awards during the competition. The students who competed for SNHS were Raven Colbert, Lindsey Askew, Justin Daniel and Michaela Vick. The team placed fourth overall and won a Gold Emblem team award. Vick earned third place overall individually. Vick and Colbert won Gold Emblem individual awards, while Daniel and Askew won Silver Emblem individual awards. The SNHS team competed under the direction of FFA adviser, Kristina Brake.

Members of the SNHS team were recognized for their national awards during the January Nash- Rocky Mount Public Schools Board of Education meeting on Thursday.

The National FFA Horse Evaluation CDE is a competitive event that tests students’ ability to select and evaluate horses.
