PINETOPS — The SouthWest Edgecombe High varsity football team kicked off its ambitious 2018 season with a resounding 54-0 nonconference victory against visiting Pasquotank County on Friday night.
The Cougars, 2-A Eastern Plains Conference co-champions and winners of 10 games in 2017, piled up all their points in the first three quarters.
Four different players scored rushing touchdown and nine backs got carries. However, SouthWest had just 20 carries for 205 yards.
Head coach Jonanthan Cobb wasn’t complaining about the results of the passing game. Senior quarterback Jayden Lewis completed three of just six tosses for 54 yards and no interceptions.
But especially pleasing for Cobb was the fact his defense returned three interceptions for touchdowns. Senior Jelan Smith darted 67 yards with a TD interception return, while junior Keishon Porter and junior Kedar Darden each returned an interception 25 yards for a TD.
Senior Wishbone back Jordan Clayton rushed for a pair of TDs, while senior Darntrell Council, junior Cortezz Jones and junior Jaquez Dickens each found the end zone on running plays. Senior Jareil Collins caught a two-point conversion pass.
Leading the Cougars’ running attack was Clayton with 80 yards on but three carries. Jones rushed twice for 44 yards.
SouthWest travels next Friday to oppose Edgecombe County rival North Edgecombe of the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference.
