Tigers claw into CAASC semifinals with rout of Thales Academy

The Wilson Prep varsity boys basketball team will now have to take its act on the road, but the Tigers now sit just two wins away from a Carolina Athletic Association for Schools of Choice state championship.

Wilson Prep jumped on visiting Thales Academy of Rolesville in the early going of  Wednesday night’s quarterfinals matchup, garnering a 16-point lead in the opening quarter en route to an 80-59 victory

The Tigers, seeded No. 1 in their four-team pod and the No. 4 overall seed in the CAASC playoffs, won their 20th game in 27 tries and advance to play No. 1 overall seed Browns Summit Piedmont Classical (27-2) on Friday on the campus of Mount Airy Millenium Charter. Saturday, WPA, winners of four straight, will play in either the championship game or the third-place contest at Lewisville Forsyth Country Day.

Three players finished in double figures for Wilson Prep, led by senior Righteous Tomlin’s 25 points. Senior Tyronne Whitaker had 12 and a third senior, Lincoln McTaggart tallied 10. 

Wilson Prep proceeded to a 41-24 halftime lead despite going just 2 of 4 from the free-throw line. The Tigers expanded the lead to 64-36 prior to the start of the fourth quarter.

Thales Academy, the No. 2 seed in its pod, dropped to 13-10 and moved into the tournament’s consolation draw.
