FOUR OAKS — Sheriff's deputies say a volunteer fire chief swindled more than $14,000 from his rural Johnston County fire department by submitting phony invoices.

Blackmon's Crossroads Fire Chief Kenan Kearney of Thompson Road south of Four Oaks was arrested Thursday, according to Capt. Jeff Caldwell of the Johnston County Sheriff's Office.

"During a review of documents from the fire department, discrepancies were found involving invoices that had been paid from fire department funds," Caldwell said in a news release.

Deputies say Kearney submitted fraudulent invoices for work on fire trucks that was never performed and received payments in excess of $14,000 from the Blackmon's Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department.

Kearney was charged with five counts of obtaining property by false pretense and booked into the Johnston County Jail in Smithfield under a $25,000 secured bond.
